Most people don't . . . care for me. I'm generally an ass. Purposefully, truth to tell. I don't make a habit of being . . . nice. My conduct at the ball was unusual. But if you'd truly like to see me, I'd enjoy that. You really were a handsome owl Peter, and I can only assume your true face is even more appealing.


[Being honest wasn't something Laurent did often, but he liked Peter. He didn't think the boy would be very successful in navigating the city, not when he was so sweet and innocent. Or appeared that way at least. He'd been charmed despite himself during their dance, and when he begged off another, he could see a bit of hurt and confusion in Peter's eyes, which had only made him more sure he oughtn't to burden the boy with his company. He wasn't a good influence, and it was entirely possible he had enemies in the city he was unaware of. Laurent was not a nice person to most of the people he met. Making Peter a target without even knowing seemed like a terribly unfair exchange for a single dance.
